We’re now just under 17 new COVID-19 cases per 100K population per day, up just over 20% in the past week.
Data source for this and other graphs of new case counts: Calculated from The New York Times. (2021). Coronavirus (Covid-19) Data in the United States. Retrieved 4/30/2022, from https://github.com/nytimes/covid-19-data.” The NY Times U.S. tracking page may be found at https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/coronavirus-us-cases.html
Vermont’s rate is now over 50 new cases per 100K per day. Rhode Island is at 45, Massachusetts is at 40. So I was premature in calling a top for the Northeast. We haven’t seen the peak there yet.
The latest counts from the US CDC show just over 50,000 new cases a day, and just under 2000 new hospitalizations a day. That makes the case hospitalization rate, based on the official counts, somewhere around 4 percent.
That said, there is no evidence yet of stress on any state hospital system. As of today, COVID-19 patients occupy under 30 percent of ICU beds in all 50 states.
