Post #1573: COVID-19 trend, now 29 new cases per 100K per day

Posted on August 19, 2022

The U.S. is now down to 29 new cases per 100K population per day, down from 31 two days ago.

Hospitalizations are below 6000 per dayDeaths are below 400 per day.

Data source for this and other graphs of new case counts:  Calculated from The New York Times. (2021). Coronavirus (Covid-19) Data in the United States. Retrieved 8/18/2022, from https://github.com/nytimes/covid-19-data.”  The NY Times U.S. tracking page may be found at https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/coronavirus-us-cases.html

I’ve rebased the graphs to start with the current (BA.4/BA.5) wave.

Maybe that’s finally starting to look like a top.  Maybe not.

A lot of people around here continue to wear masks in the stores.  No longer a majority, but not a negligible fraction either.  The notable thing is that everyone I see wearing a mask is wearing a pretty good mask.  Which seems to make sense.

Given the current rates of incidence, I don’t think continuing to take that cheap precaution is irrational.  There’s still close to 6000 people a day that get hospitalized for this.  My goal remains not to be one of them.
